Taking breaks that actually help
Many people push on without stopping and then arrive tired and hungry. Short, regular breaks keep a walk enjoyable and make the last hour easier.
Little and often
Stop for five minutes every hour rather than for half an hour once. Drink, eat something small and adjust a layer before you get cold or hot.
Choose somewhere sheltered from the wind. Ten minutes in a windy spot costs you more warmth than it gives back.
Eat before you need to
Hunger shows up late. A bit of fruit, nuts or a sandwich every hour keeps energy even. Keep a snack at the top of the bag so you do not have to unpack everything to reach it.
