Walking through the seasons

A route you know well is a different place in each season. Light, ground, daylight and temperature all change, and so should your plan.

Spring and summer

Longer days give room for longer routes, but heat is a real risk on open hills. Carry more water than you think you need, start early and plan shade for the middle of the day.

Paths are often overgrown in early summer; long trousers help against nettles and ticks.

Autumn and winter

Days are short, so work out your latest turn-around time before you set off and keep to it. Leaves and mud make descents slower, and a head torch is worth carrying even on a short walk.

In frost, the north side of a hill can stay icy all day. Choose south-facing slopes and keep your pace steady.
